Rabbit Not Drinking Water: Causes and Hydration Tips

Dehydration in rabbits accelerates GI stasis and kidney stress. Learn why rabbits sometimes refuse water and how to ensure adequate hydration.

How Much Water Do Rabbits Need?

An average rabbit needs approximately 50–150 ml of water per kg of body weight daily. A 2 kg rabbit should drink 100–300 ml per day. Fresh vegetables contribute significant water β€” rabbits on high-fresh-green diets often drink less water from their bottle or bowl. But rabbits on a pellet-only or primarily hay diet must drink adequate water. Dehydration causes gut slowdown and contributes to urinary sludge and kidney disease over time.

First 3 Steps When a Rabbit Won't Drink

  1. Offer both a bowl and a bottle: Some rabbits prefer drinking from an open bowl (more natural posture) while others prefer bottles. Offering both allows the rabbit to choose. Change water daily β€” rabbits often reject stale or warm water.
  2. Add fresh greens to the diet: Leafy greens like romaine lettuce, cilantro, and leafy herbs have very high water content and significantly contribute to total fluid intake. A rabbit that's eating lots of greens may drink much less without being dehydrated.
  3. Check for oral pain or illness: A rabbit that normally drinks well and suddenly stops may be in pain from dental disease or may have GI stasis developing. Assess overall health alongside the water refusal.

When to Go to the Vet Immediately

  • No drinking for more than 12 hours with no fresh greens
  • Signs of dehydration: skin tenting, dry mouth, lethargy
  • Not drinking alongside not eating β€” double emergency

Follow-Up Care Checklist

  • Keep water containers clean β€” biofilm accumulates quickly in water bottles, reducing palatability
  • Provide fresh water at room temperature, not cold β€” cold water is often refused by rabbits
  • Add a very small drop of unsweetened apple juice to water to encourage drinking in stubborn cases (vet-guided only)

Track Water Intake with TailRounds

Measure water levels daily and log consumption in the TailRounds Daily Log, noting fresh greens provided. This helps you establish a true baseline for your specific rabbit.

Book a Vet Appointment

A rabbit that has stopped drinking and eating needs urgent evaluation. Book at Happy Paws immediately for hydration assessment and stasis evaluation.

Summary for Your Clinic Visit

Tell your vet how long the rabbit has been drinking less, the current diet including fresh greens, last dropping observed, and any other symptoms present.
