What Causes Diarrhea in Guinea Pigs?

True diarrhea (liquid or very soft unformed stool) in guinea pigs is a red flag. Unlike the soft cecotropes of rabbits, guinea pigs don't produce cecotropes and all soft or liquid stool is abnormal. Common causes include abrupt dietary changes, high sugar or starch foods (fruit in excess, sugary treats), antibiotic-associated diarrhea (certain antibiotics like amoxicillin are dangerous to guinea pigs), Salmonella infection, E. coli, Yersinia, and parasites. Antibiotic toxicity is a particular concern — never give a guinea pig antibiotics prescribed for another species without explicit vet approval.

First 3 Steps to Take at Home

Remove all fresh food and treats temporarily: Return to plain timothy hay only for 24–48 hours. This removes dietary triggers and gives the gut a chance to stabilize. Continue providing fresh water.
Assess dehydration urgently: Diarrhea in small animals causes rapid dehydration. Pinch the skin and check gum moisture. Significant dehydration in a guinea pig requires veterinary supportive fluids — home management is insufficient.
Check for antibiotic exposure: Has the guinea pig recently been given any medication? Amoxicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, lincomycin, and clindamycin are examples of antibiotics that can cause fatal colitis in guinea pigs. If yes, inform your vet immediately.

When to Go to the Vet Immediately

Any diarrhea in a guinea pig under 6 months — kits dehydrate extremely fast
Bloody diarrhea
Diarrhea with concurrent lethargy or not eating
Signs of dehydration
Recent antibiotic exposure alongside diarrhea — antibiotic toxicity is an emergency
