Why a Daily Routine Is Critical for Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs are prey animals that mask illness. By the time you notice visible signs of disease, the problem has often been developing for days. A consistent daily routine that includes health observation, food monitoring, and environmental checks gives you the best chance of catching problems early. It also builds a baseline β knowing what "normal" looks like for your specific guinea pig makes abnormalities obvious.
The Daily Guinea Pig Care Routine
- Morning food check: Was the previous night's hay largely consumed? Any pellets remaining from the night before suggest reduced eating. Refill the hay rack. Check that the water bottle is working and full. Offer fresh vegetables including vitamin C-rich food.
- Observe the guinea pig: Does it come to the enclosure front when you approach (normal)? Is it alert and responsive? Any drooling around the mouth? Any discharge from eyes or nose? Is it moving normally or favoring a leg?
- Dropping check: Scan the enclosure for droppings. A healthy guinea pig produces dozens of droppings per day. Noticeably fewer droppings, elongated or misshapen droppings, or very tiny droppings all indicate gut problems that warrant attention today.
- Floor time: Provide at least 1β2 hours of floor time daily (or a large enough enclosure that floor time is always available). Observe activity level, mobility, and social interaction with companions during this time.
Weekly Checks
- Weigh each guinea pig (same time, same day each week)
- Check nails for overgrowth
- Check ears for any wax accumulation or redness
- Check the perineal area for any skin issues or accumulation
- Full bedding change
When to Call the Vet
- Not eating for more than 8 hours
- No droppings for 4+ hours
- Any respiratory symptoms
- Lethargy or unresponsiveness
- Any weight loss of more than 5% in one week
