Dog Eye Discharge: Normal or Not?

The difference between harmless eye discharge and signs of infection, injury, or glaucoma in dogs β€” and when to call the vet.

What Causes Eye Discharge in Dogs?

A small amount of eye discharge β€” the "sleep" in the corner of your dog's eye in the morning β€” is completely normal. But discharge that's excessive, discolored, or causing squinting, redness, or pawing at the eye is a different matter. Dog eye discharge can range from benign (minor irritation, blocked tear duct) to serious (infection, corneal ulcer, glaucoma, dry eye disease). The color, consistency, and which eye is affected all provide important clues. Clear, watery discharge: usually irritation or allergies. Yellow/green thick discharge: infection. Reddish-brown staining below the eye without obvious discharge: epiphora (tear overflow), common in flat-faced breeds.

First 3 Steps You Can Take at Home

  1. Clean the discharge gently: Use a clean, soft cloth or gauze dampened with sterile saline or clean water. Wipe from the inner corner of the eye outward. Never use cotton wool (fibers can get in the eye), and never use any human eye drops unless specifically prescribed by your vet. Keeping discharge cleaned away prevents it from becoming crusty, which can glue eyelids shut and harbor bacteria.
  2. Assess the eye carefully: Look at the white of the eye (sclera) β€” is it red? Look at the cornea (the clear front of the eye) β€” is it clear, or does it look hazy, cloudy, or scratched? Is your dog squinting or keeping the eye partially shut? Squinting is pain β€” a dog that squints persistently has something wrong with the eye that needs same-day veterinary attention. A cloudy cornea can indicate a corneal ulcer or glaucoma, both of which need urgent treatment.
  3. Check for a hair or foreign body irritating the eye: Long facial hair rubbing on the cornea is a common cause of chronic watery eyes in small or flat-faced breeds. Gently trim any long hair that falls across the eye (use blunt-tipped scissors and have someone help hold your dog). Eyelid abnormalities like entropion (inward-rolling eyelids) can also cause chronic discharge and need surgical correction if persistent.

When to Go to the Vet Immediately

  • Squinting, keeping eye closed, or rubbing the eye continuously
  • Cloudy, hazy, or bluish cornea
  • Yellow or green discharge with eye redness and swelling
  • Eye looking sunken or bulging compared to the other eye
  • Sudden loss of vision signs β€” bumping into things, reluctance to move in dim light

Follow-Up Care Checklist

  • ☐ Clean eye discharge daily with sterile saline
  • ☐ Trim facial hair that contacts the eye
  • ☐ Monitor for any change in clarity or amount of discharge
  • ☐ Apply any prescribed eye drops correctly β€” aim for the inner corner and hold the eye open for a few seconds
  • ☐ Complete the full course of any eye medication prescribed

Book a Vet Appointment

Eye problems can worsen very quickly. A corneal scratch that seems minor can become a serious ulcer within 24 hours if not treated. When in doubt about an eye symptom, calling your vet for advice the same day is always the right call. Book an appointment at Happy Paws Veterinary Clinic β€” same-week slots are usually available.
